SUNDAY 2 APRIL 2023

Edvard Grieg’s first published quartet is sometimes credited with inspiring Claude Debussy’s groundbreaking quartet. It is packed with so much of the energy and ingenuity of a composer just reaching the maturity of his powers that he had a fight on his hands just to convince publishers that it was playable by only four players.

A twenty-something Ludwig van Beethoven somehow managed to compose 6 early quartets that were at once perfect hommages to his teacher Haydn and idol Mozart yet also entirely authentic manifestations of Ludwig’s own inner fire and contrariness. The results are full of power and energy, paragons of Classical composition.
