In 1799 Beethoven composed his Op. 18 No. 3 for the Russian ambassador in Vienna and was rewarded with commensurate critical plaudits and eventually a healthy commission. Eighty years later, when a request came to Dvořák for his new string quartet Op. 61 to be premiered in Vienna, he turned to Beethoven for inspiration, hoping for a taste of the master’s success.
