Emboldened by his independence from the Esterhazy family, Haydn produced Op. 76, No. 2, one from a perfect set of quartets ripe with individual character and innovation. Under intense pressure from the Soviet regime, Shostakovich produced his third string quartet. A work with startling artistic range, it managed to satisfy Communist Party censors while expressing the grief and exhaustion of life in the Soviet Union after WWII.
